Two weeks ago I mentioned that I may have some big news. Well I do.
I have sold my first large (relatively) development project and have decided to run my own company full time.
Some of you may be a bit surprised if you know what has happened in my career in the past 3 months or so. I had been working over the past 2 years at a company called Urban Science. I met and worked with some very impressive developers while there and loved my job. The biggest problem was the commute. I was driving from my house to downtown Detroit ever day. The distance wasn't that bad, but when adding in all the construction around here it wore on me. To the point where I really didn't want to continue with the drive.
I started looking for work closer to home. I interviewed and eventually accepted a position with a company called Latitude Consulting Group. They are based out of Saline where I live, and also have an office in Howell. I worked out of their Howell office.
Things were going well at Latitude. I expected to work their for a long time. Then, I had the opportunity fall in my lap to submit a proposal for one of my freelance clients. I received the RFP on a Monday, submitted the proposal on a Wednesday, gave a sales pitch on a Friday, and won the project on the following Monday. It happened very quick.
I told Latitude of my decision last Thursday and am currently finishing my two weeks for them. That was hard. I felt bad about only giving them two months of work before leaving, but this opportunity was too good.
I hope to leverage this project into more development projects and possibly use it to fund (partially) some software development ideas I have.
I will blog about my decisions over the next few months on getting this thing setup so others may learn and I may learn from them about starting a company from scratch. Look for more soon.
