Two weeks ago I was playing hockey. During the game I jammed my wrist. I don't remember exactly how, against the boards or another person I think. It hurt, but not so bad that I couldn't keep playing. Ironically I was ejected from the game about 3 shifts later for checking a guy into the boards (I play in a non-checking league). I went home and got some sleep. The next day my wrist hurt bad. I couldn't turn doorknobs, couldn't grip anything. I thought I sprained it so I decided to see if it would heal on it's own. After a week of still hurting I thought something might be wrong. I went to the doctor who then ordered xrays. After reviewing the xrays, they thought it looked like I fractured my scaphoid bone. The referred me to a specialist. Today I had my appointment with the specialist. It's official. I've broken my Scaphoid bone. Here's some info. I've never broken a bone before. I found this quote interesting from another med site:
“Although the bone is small, it takes a lot to break it. Oddly enough, twice as much force is required to break the scaphoid bone as to break one of the bigger forearm bones.”
Apparently that jam was pretty hard. It turns out that I also need to have surgery on it to fix it. They are going to put a screw in to connect the bone back together and then I will be in a cast for at least 2 weeks. Obviously I'm done playing hockey for the season. The good news for me is that I can still type. I have a brace on now and even with the cast I can still make a fist and move all my fingers except my thumb.
Not only have I never broken a bone... I've never had surgery. I'm just breaking all sorts of new ground here (no pun inteded).
