My wife's niece graduated today from Saline High School. I went to the ceremony and was shocked. I knew that I lived in a predominately white community, but I had no idea just how white. I didn't see one black or Latino kid at the graduation. That's out of 400 students. Now I'm a pretty liberal wide open guy who expects my kids to accept people for who they are regardless of their race, religion, or sexual orientation. So for those of you who do read this blog and feel like some non-tech discussion, should I be concerned about living in a community with as close to zero diversity as you can get?
It made me think about my high school, Westerville North HS in Westerville, Ohio. I wouldn't say it was exactly the diversity Mecca or anything, but certainly there were other races/cultures represented. Did I learn to be open just based on my parents and how they raised me? Are peoples attitudes about this effected by the amount of diversity that is around them? I've always heard really good things about Saline schools, but I was simply shocked by the lack of diversity.
what do you think?
